How do you approach B2 writing?

A useful complaint identifies the service, contrasts the promised and actual experience, explains the effect and requests a reasonable response. In standard telc B2, develop the required task points; an angry tone or a memorised demand does not replace relevant detail.

Which official B2 requirements apply?

The standard model offers two writing alternatives; complete one, not both. Allow 30 minutes and write at least 150 words. Develop three of the four supplied points, or two plus a relevant aspect of your own. The rubric covers Aufgabenbewältigung, Kommunikative Gestaltung and Formale Richtigkeit. This is different from Goethe B2's two-part writing module.

How do you plan a complaint that the reader can act on?

  • Identify the transaction briefly: what was booked and when?
  • Separate an advertised promise from your observation. This makes the discrepancy clear.
  • Explain a consequence relevant to your situation, not a list of unrelated frustrations.
  • Choose a proportionate request and ask how the provider will respond.

Before drafting, mark which task points your plan develops. The complaint sequence is a writing strategy, not a compulsory four-paragraph exam rule. Do not invent legal rights, compensation guarantees or threats. In an original practice scenario you can supply plausible supporting details; in a real complaint they must be true.

Original exercise: an inaccessible luggage locker

Goethi practice situation: a locker service advertises access until 22:00, but its building closes at 19:00. Write about your expectations, the incident, its consequences and a possible solution. For the B2 practice alternative, develop three of these four points or two plus a relevant own aspect. The model below develops all four; that is a choice, not a new requirement.

How does the model develop its points?

  • Expectation: the first paragraph links the advertised hours to the evening event. The detail explains why the access time mattered.
  • Incident: the locked door and inconsistent sign distinguish observation from a general accusation. The unsuccessful call explains why the writer could not resolve it immediately.
  • Consequence: the delayed journey follows from the unavailable luggage. The model stays with one coherent problem instead of adding a different complaint.
  • Solution: reimbursement of the locker fee and clarification of the hours are framed as requests, not guaranteed entitlements.

The subject line names the service. The greeting and closing maintain formal register. These choices make the message usable, but they do not establish any official score.

Which connectors make a complaint precise?

  • „Obwohl ich … anrief, konnte ich …“ expresses an unexpected result. Anrief closes the subordinate clause; konnte begins the following main clause.
  • „Da sich … befanden, musste ich …“ gives a reason. The finite verb befanden stays at the end of its clause.
  • „Ich bitte Sie deshalb …“ connects the request to the explanation. If deshalb starts the sentence, write „Deshalb bitte ich Sie …“.
  • „Entgegen der Beschreibung …“ contrasts an observation with a stated promise; it does not need an emotional adjective.

Choose verbs with a clear object: eine Buchung bestätigen, eine Gebühr erstatten, eine Zeitangabe prüfen. Erstatten means reimburse; ersetzen can mean replace or compensate depending on its object. Select the word that names the action you actually request.

What weak sentences can you improve?

  • Aggressive: „Sie müssen sofort alles bezahlen!“ More measured: „Ich bitte Sie, meinen Erstattungswunsch zu prüfen.“
  • Wrong: „Deshalb ich musste warten.“ Correct: „Deshalb musste ich warten.“
  • Decorative detail: a long account of the entire trip distracts from the service problem. Retain details that support a selected task point.

What should you check before submitting?

  • Have I answered one alternative with the required selection of points?
  • Does each important complaint have an identifiable observation or consequence?
  • Is the request clear and consistent with the situation?
  • Is the text at least 150 words without unrelated padding?
  • Are subject, greeting, closing, Sie forms and paragraph connections appropriate?

For another attempt, change the service and the consequence rather than replacing a few nouns in this model. Use the ready-made sets below to practise a genuinely different prompt.
