German Connectors for Writing Exams
Connectors (Konnektoren) make your German writing flow. At A1–A2 you'll mostly use und, aber, oder, weil, deshalb. From B1 onwards, examiners expect subordinating connectors like obwohl, während, damit and contrast/consequence connectors like jedoch, dennoch, folglich, infolgedessen. C1 and C2 candidates should add nuanced linking devices such as hinsichtlich, gleichwohl, mithin, ungeachtet.
Goethe Writing Phrases from A1 to C2
The Goethe exams test concrete Schreiben tasks: short messages at A1, semi-formal emails at A2/B1, complaints and opinion texts at B2, and structured Stellungnahmen at C1/C2. The phrases above are grouped to match these task types so you can quickly find what you need.
Formal German Email and Letter Phrases
Standard openings (Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren), polite requests (Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn …) and closings (Mit freundlichen Grüßen) are essential from B1 upwards. For very formal C2 correspondence, use Hochachtungsvoll and structured polite formulas.
German Argumentation Phrases for B2, C1 and C2
At B2 you balance pros and cons (einerseits … andererseits). At C1 you argue with nuance (dennoch sollte nicht außer Acht gelassen werden, dass …). At C2 you discuss critically and abstractly (bei genauerer Betrachtung zeigt sich, dass …).
