Which German dictionary should I use?

Starting with translations?

A bilingual dictionary such as dict.cc or Langenscheidt helps connect a familiar language to German. Compare the noun article and the example context, not just the first translation.

dict.cc ↗

Spelling or meaning without translation?

Use Duden for spelling and grammatical information, or DWDS for German definitions and usage evidence. A monolingual explanation helps separate similar meanings.

Duden ↗

Better words for B2/C1 writing?

OpenThesaurus suggests alternatives. A synonym is not an automatic replacement: check its meaning, register and usual word combinations before using it.

OpenThesaurus ↗

Conjugating a verb?

Verbformen shows German conjugation and declension tables. Check the tense and person you actually need; a correct isolated form can still be wrong in your sentence.

Verbformen · Netzverb ↗

Natural phrases and example sentences?

Use Linguee for bilingual context, Tatoeba for translated sentences, or Wortschatz Leipzig for corpus evidence. Examples can contain unusual wording; compare several rather than copy one.

Linguee ↗

How does the word sound?

Forvo provides community recordings. Compare speakers where available and notice accent differences. It complements a definition dictionary rather than replacing one.

From a lookup to your own Goethe B2 sentence

You are practising a Goethe B2 post about a city with less car traffic. Rather than inserting many new words, check one expression carefully:

  1. Meaning: look up “verringern” in DWDS or Duden. Does it match what you want to say?
  2. Grammar: check the verb form and its object, for example “den Autoverkehr verringern”.
  3. Alternatives: compare “reduzieren” in OpenThesaurus, then verify meaning and register.
  4. Usage: compare several contextual examples in Linguee or Wortschatz Leipzig.
  5. Your own sentence: “Bessere Busverbindungen könnten den Autoverkehr in der Innenstadt verringern.” Then explain your reason.
  6. Apply it: write your own practice response on Goethi and check that your word choice supports your argument.

Original learning example, not an official exam task. Dictionaries support preparation; permitted aids in an actual exam depend on that exam’s rules.

Put your vocabulary into practice

For optional AI practice feedback, explore the Writing Checker. An account and available credits are required; this is not an official exam assessment.

Independent editorial selection, not a ranking or a partnership. These services are not Goethi products. Names and marks belong to their respective owners.
